The Dead came out smoking for this one. This was the run.
Not wise to speak in terms of decades because '82-'89 don't compare.

Subject: Identical to the other Jim Wise version
Today 10/12/09 there are 7 versions of this here and I listened to each one partially to judge relative audio quality.

This notes lineage but if you take the time to listen this is identical to the first JW version posted here. Not the best here now.

IMO it is this one:
Source: 2 Nakamichi 300 mics > Sony TC D-5m (Dolby B)(TDK SA-X 90, Maxell UDXL-II 90 'Estimated thru Baby Blue')
Lineage: Nakamichi Dragon (Dolby B decoded) > Panasonic SV 3700 DAT (A/D conversion)(HP data cartridge) > Apple G4 (RME interface)(Peak 5 editing) > Xact

MajorDomo what does Dolby B say to you?
Done properly it says, less noise, more signal to me.

Dolby B says it all. too bad.

Subject: The Boys Were On
One of the better series of shows that year as I recall thinking then and this recording bears that out ... they are amazingly on throughout. The China/Rider is tight!

Subject: "Full Moon Saturday Night!!!"
Jerry is so incredibly on from start to finish it's ridiculous. This is deceptively one of the best shows of the 80s, the standard setlist hides that. Even the CC Rider is epic in this TITANIC second set!

Subject: Where is Phil
Great show for Jerry. 1st set highlites include Shakedown,Bird Song Cassidy, China>Rider. 2nd set is Solid with Jerry Blazing away. But Phil's playing is way sub par. He is lost, asleep or uninterested. Check out his complete absence during Eyes. The music just suffers when Phil is not into it. Jerry is on Fire but Phil is asleep There is a void so 4 not 5 stars

Subject: Suave, Sophisticated Smoooth Dead on a great AUD
one of my favorite shows ever. Amazing recording. One of the best first sets of the 80s. Jerry sings whale songs at the end of Eyes.

Subject: Monster Show
The summer tours of '81 were anbsolutely epic, and this 3 show set at the Greeks were the perfec t way to top off a great summer. This show is one of the best I ever saw. From the very first notes of Shakedown, this show just never lets the energy down. All three of these shows are awesome, but tjhis one is the crown jewel, Download it now!

Subject: Great AUD show
Yep. Great download-worthy AUD recording - classic '81 era, just the right mix of high quality sound and crowd noise. tasty sets and performance to boot.

this is a top '81 downloadable

Subject: The Greek
I was at these shows. I do believe these were the first Greek shows since the 1960s. And these were absolutely tremendous. The way they set them up was: 7 p.m. for the Friday shows, 5 p.m. for the Saturday shows, and I think 1 p.m. for the Sunday shows. This setlist is unbeatable.

When is Jerry coming back, anyway? :)

Subject: Best Scarlet > Fire Ever
This show absolutely rips from the first note on. To me this is the gem of this great Greek run, and IMHO is one of the best shows I have ever heard, the energy is amazing, and the crowd reaction demonstrates that the fans understand that they are witnessing a special show (I always loved Bay Area audiences, they were always a lot more laid back, and not as anxious as East Coast or Midwest fans. They got into the music just as much, but were more content to just let the band take them whereever they wanted to.) . Shakedown is one for the ages with Jerry an Phil soaring in the Jam. Bird Song is one of the best ever and the China Cat > Rider ranks as one of the top versions ever. The Scarlet > Fire is phenomenal and is my personal favorite, Jerry takes some great turns during the jam, slowing it down so sweetly before the Fire intro, and then we get one of the most powerful Fires I have heard. The Prophet > Eyes is epic as well, (one of the greatest Eyes I have heard) with a great space jam with Jerry leading the way. This is one of the rare pre-drums space jams, with the whole pre-drums lasting over one hour. After drums does not dissapoint either with a classic NFA followed by a Wharf Rat for the ages (apologies for the repeated superlatives, but this show deserves it!!). The only thing missing is the 2nd encore and of course, Bobby getting us all to yell "Hey Phil..." to get Lesh on stage. To top all this off, this audience recording is among the cleanest and purest ones around. 5 Stars all around for this monster show!!!

As an aside one of the things I always loved about the Greek Theater was that the whole place was wired for sound, from the stairs to the bathrooms, so you didn't have to wait for a set break to do your business, you would not miss a note where ever you were. The Oakland Auditorium Arena was also wired in this way. Also there was a fenced in soccer field right next to the arena where Graham had set up speakers for those Heads who could not get in, a real nice gesture that some friends who had travelled over a 1,000 miles took advantage of.

Subject: Best of 1981?
You have got to be kiddin me! This audience recording just smokes--plain and simple. The Birdsong and Cassidy are incredibly hot. The band is clearly en fuego and this recording captures the pure excitement of a crowd that knows they are seein the boys firing on all cylinders. Stop reading and start downloading!

Subject: another great show
This show is completely awsome. Who ever said that the eighties were cheezy. Download this show. The china cat sunflower into i know you rider ends the first set. But then scarlet begonias and fire on the mountain open the second set with a big bang. Shakedown street is full of energy, and wharf rat is amazing.
